Unit 35 Social Media

P1

Facebook
Purpose
Facebook was founded in 2004 with a mission to give people the power to share and make the world more open connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with their friends and family, to discover what is going on in the world and also to share and express what matters to them.  ''We are building Facebook to make the world more open and transparent, which we believe will create a greater understanding and connection.''

Content
The whole point of Facebook is for the people to use. Every user has the freedom to post anything they want on their profile, photos, videos or simple text posts. Users can also share posts that have been posted by other users and the shared post will appear on their profile wall. Users can use the like button if they like a post. Users can add friends via friend requests. Users can also tag their friends in their posts or comments and notifications will show up if they get tagged in a post. There is a chat window that allows you to message your friends even if they are offline and its completely free.
Users can play games on Facebook and send requests to other users to recommend the game or help them complete it. Facebook also has groups that can be made by anyone; the group can be for anything, and can be edited whenever you want to change it, you can invite people to it and they can join.

Target/User Membership

Facebook tends to be aimed at a younger age, people below the age of 24, these users usually create their account when they are below the age rating which is 13 because the age can be lied about. Although it is aimed at younger people, studies done by Pingdom in 2012 have shown that 65% of Facebook users are above 35 and just 14% of the users are below 24.

Sources of Revenue

Facebook is worth more than $100 Billion. Most of their profit comes from advertising revenue which makes them $1 billion per quarter. Facebook games such as Farmville also make them a large profit, in 2012 Facebook generated $186 million from non-advertising revenue, such as selling credits for games like Farmville, that is a lot of money from just Facebook games but all this is because of the number of people that use the social networking site, since there are 1.2 billion active monthly users.

Legal/Ethical Issues

There is a lot of controversial and unethical, sometimes illegal content on Facebook, and it's difficult to control it with so many users. People have the freedom to post anything, and a lot of the time people don't consider who could see their post, the post could be offensive and could be insulting to many people. For example, someone shares a video showing nudity/porn, anyone who is friends with the person can see the video, some people could be underage and can view the video which is unethical.

Instagram

Purpose
Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. ''To capture and share the world's moments''

Content
Instagram allows users to upload videos and images, and share them to friends and the public, as well as allowing the users to message each other, and share other people's content to your friends and followers. You can create your own profile on Instagram, allowing you to upload your videos and images for the public to see. You can write your bio under your name that can be customized whenever. Users can follow other users to see the pictures and videos that they post, and they can use the 'like' button to like content. You can search for certain people using their name in the search bar to view their profile, there is also a wall feed that lets you view the latest content posted on Instagram.

Target/User Membership
The minimum age to open an account on Instagram is 13 and above, if you're 12 and below you are told not to sign up for Instagram. If a user is under 13 and they lie at sign up for Instagram, they are breaking Instagram's terms of service. It allows users to message each other therefore teenagers could use it for that reason. I think that Instagram is aimed at both genders and ages ranging from 15 to 50, this is because some adults use the website for their job e.g. Photographers or models. I think its also aimed at teenagers because its a social networking site that allows friends to share videos and photos which is what teenagers like to do.

Sources of Revenue
Instagram has been owned by Facebook since 2012 and the websites only source of revenue comes from advertisement on the website. Their advertisements work in a similar way to Facebook, they are appropriate and relevant to the user.

Legal/Ethical Issues
There have been many issues regarding nudity on the website. Protests have been made in the past for the fact that men were allowed to pose shirtless in a photo where women were not, and the shirtless photos of women were taken down off of the social media website.

Twitter
Purpose
Twitter, one of the most popular social networking services in the world, is a micro blogging platform, which allows registered users to post, and send to other registered users, short messages. These short messages, limited to 140 characters, are called Tweets. ''To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.''

Content
Twitter has around 310 million active users every month. With your own twitter account you can change your profile picture, write your bio, edit your username, find friends and follow people and the content they add on their profile, and many more. You can tweet by using the text box at the top of the homepage of Twitter, although you are limited to 140 characters, you can add a picture and tag people in the post. You can re-tweet other peoples posts and their post will show up on your profile, in the re-tweet you can reply to the post or favourite it. Twitter also allows you to upload photos and free private messaging.

Target/User Membership
To create an account the user must be 13 +. It is aimed at teenagers and young adults, aged 15-35. Twitter seems a more complicated website than e.g. Facebook and has a lot of younger people using it therefore older people might find it difficult to use. Teenagers use their phones a lot these days and can tweet wherever they are.

Sources of Revenue
Twitter's main source of revenue, like Facebook and Instagram is from advertisements. 85% of their revenue is from ads. They use a similar method to Facebook and Instagram to show these ads to users, making them appropriate and relevant to the user.

Legal/Ethical Issues
A big legal issues is copyright, tweets that contain copyrighted material become a legal issue, especially if the person has no right to use the material and gives no credit to the creator of the material.
