TASK 2 CHARLES BURNS CASE STUDY:
Genre
Content/Style
In Robot Love the protagonist detective (El Borbah) is searching for a missing person, similar to the Dick Tracy newspaper strip where the detective protagonist (Dick Tracy) is also searching for a missing person, although in slight contrast to Robot Love, the protagonist is searching for a criminal and not the victim. Both comics have strong narrative, such as explicit violence and broad humour. This shows that Chester Gould could have had influence on Charles Burns' narrative work in Robot Love. In an interview Burns said he really liked and admired Gould's work. The styles of Robot Love & Dick Tracy are very similar to each other as they both rely on thick and heavy outlines and contrasting areas of white and black, this is another illustration of how Gould's work had an influence on Burns' visual work.
Meaning
Big Baby has themes of crime and violence, such as a man (presumably dead) being dragged into a hole by another man who is wearing a monster mask. Robot Love tackles similar themes of black comedy, also revolving around crime and violence, in which you can see the protagonist being tied up on a chair in a dark room, presumably to be tortured.
Audience
Francoise Mouly's and Art Spiegelman's made the anthology magazine RAW to showcase the expressive possibilities of alternative comics. The audience for RAW would principally be mature teenage males and over as a lot of the content would not be suitable for a younger audience, the themes also tend to revolve around something a male would enjoy more than a female.
Characters
The character that is El Borbah is based of the Mexican wrestler Lucha Libre due to Charles Burns' love of wrestling, that he used to watch on TV as a boy; Burns found the costumes and names of the wrestlers incredible. 1981, when watching TV, Burns came across a wrestling match, one of the wrestlers was a big guy with a tiny mask covered in tattoos, Burns quickly sketched in his notebook and named his new character El Borbah. Burns named the character in honor of Mexican wrestlers he admired, and of his friend John Borba, whose name he wanted to immortalize as well as certain aspects of his personality. El Borbah ended up being a big guy in a tight wrestler costume, with a mask covering his whole head; although the main facial features (Eyes, nose, mouth) can be seen, they are very alien-like and abnormal when comparing him to the other human characters.
